HIKING AND SURVIVAL ESSENTIALS INFORMATION

Enhance your preparation, skills, and safety in trips to the backcountry. Included in this class is information on the ten essentials and why we need them, hazards, wilderness survival, equipment, clothing, trip planning, Leave No Trace (LNT) principles, weather, and nutrition. Concerned about what to do if you unexpectedly have to spend the night in the outdoors? This course will inform you about building fire, shelter, signaling, and finding water. One day field trip, attend Saturday or Sunday. Select the day during the course, and please be flexible if you can so we can arrange equal size groups. Topics covered include:
- 10 Essential items or systems to bring with you and their uses
- Selecting packs, equipment, 3 layers of clothing, and boots
- Preparing for possible hazards of backcountry travel
- Organizing a trip
- Leave No Trace practices
- Preview of first aid and handling medical conditions likely in the backcountry. What to do if someone is injured or has hypothermia
- Wilderness Survival
- What to do if you have to spend a night outdoors:
