Current Opportunities
(2/1/09) Drupal - Rick is working a online database for BMS instructors for the website.
Status update (4/30/09): the output side (Views) has been figured out. Need to locate and install a module that will allow me to upload the data (as CVS files) from current Access DB and spreadsheets.
Status update (10/11/09): this project has been put on hold until further examination of the capabilities of the state database and web connectivity to it. Rick will be scheduling a meeting with Bill Smith to do this and report back to the Council
and BMS on the matter.
(1/1/09) Drupal - Rick has also mentioned a longer term idea for more general use on the website for content updating.
~4/2/09) Web directory and FTP relayout: We had some recent hacking and the wide sharing of passwords we have done is one security rule we break regularly. The way Dreamhost sets up ftp users and web areas makes this a pain to work on,
but I think we need to go do it. Currently: Wayne.
5/19/09 update (Wayne): the use of seperate users for ftp areas is a PAIN. Guess we have to share the password and live with risk.
10/7/09 update (Wayne): one idea to minimize use of main passwords is to push content out to the document repository (like is done with this).
CSS layout: We have a new layout that we would like to use, and I've tried a little to do the CSS layout, but keep having some glitches hang around. Peter Stout is a graphics/artist person who has come up with some layouts people liked,
but the technology behind them is table based layout and page specific CSS. With the number of pages we have around, that is just a nightmare to head down that path. So we have some good graphics input, but I haven't found the time to work
on the layout. The model Brian put in place uses a master CSS page, has a separate layout section, then styling section.
Status update (10/7/09): Stalled, but still planned.
(4/1/09) Leadership page updates: The stuff Rick mentioned about the accident reporting form.
Status update 10/11/09 (by Rick): The Leadership page has been completed. New item: add an Accident Reporting section. This would direct BCMC leaders to the obscure section on the state website where
there is an ONLINE REPORTING FORM FOR ACCIDENTS (which I've already forgotten where it is....)
Fix the site map
Status update 10/11/09 (rick): For Wayne: status? Worth keeping? Is it used? (wayne): probably - mostly it is just excluding junk and document stuff from the map.
Fix the search engine
Status update 10/11/09 (rick): For Wayne: status? Worth keeping? Is it used? (wayne): Don't know, I just notice it is broken since we moved servers and have not researched it. As an example use, I would hope the keyword 'accidents' would help locate the reporting info for them if one could not find it, so probably worth fixing.
Main page cleanup. Need to get a few random photos or the most recent few from bigger list. Maybe other pages can get random pics, need a easy way for them to do that. Also need a way to view the full archive of pic's.
Status update 10/11/09 (rick): Wayne is working on this. Definitely worth doing! (wayne, 11/5/09): Did the select 12 pics and moved the news bar. Still have to add a link to the full archive.
unencoded email: Scan the web pages and find any unencoded email addresses that have snuck in. GPS also is a source of these.
Status update 10/11/09 (rick): This appears to be an open task. (wayne): Did once, need to be redone and perhaps we need a GPS strategy for how to publish email addresses that can not be easily harvested? (12/6/2010, Wayne): found more cases in the trips page and some other pages for the outings email. Rescan needed. Also found that state website has lots of our forwarding addresses in clear text.
Online Trip Report Instructions (1/7/2010): Rick is working on adding a webpage that will summarize how Trip Leaders can file their Trip Reports online. The page will also link to a more comprehensive, detailed 6.5 page set on instructions from the state office, which covers all aspects of online trip management, from scheduling, confirming, roster and reporting.
Menu/pages cleanup: Replaced the email forwarder page with a pointer to the Contact Us page and need to delete in the future. Also noted first 3 council sub menu items are obsolete, need to change to pointers or delete.
Recently Completed items
(4/1/09) Leadership page updates: Some other presentation to be added, and maybe some outdated stuff to remove? Rick is aware of this.
