Ice Climbing Schools

Intro to Ice Climbing

Prerequisites

CMC Basic Rock Climbing or equivalent from other mountaineering club or instruction from guiding company (Front Range Climbing Company, Bolder Mountain School, RMI, AAI etc.) and at least 10 days climbing experience on rock. In other words, you need to be competent in basic climbing safety systems, including belaying, communication, tying-in, etc.  Climbing in the gym does not qualify. 

School will provide: water ice crampons, ice tools, ropes and anchoring equipment.

Students provide mountaineering boots that can accept water ice crampons with bail, helmet, harness, belay device (ATC or GriGri), locking carabiner (twist lock or dual autolock)

Students may use their own equipment. Please note:  NO ice tools with Adz, No GriGri+. No Scarpa Inverno boots, No Black Diamond Magnetron Carabiner or similar. No lightweight mountaineering harnesses i.e. Alpine Bod, Black Diamond Couloir, Petzl Altitude or similar.

 Advanced Ice Climbing School (AICS)

Prerequisites

CMC Basic Rock Climbing, Rock Leading School or equivalent from other mountaineering club or instruction from guiding company (Front Range Climbing Company, Bolder Mountain School, RMI, AAI etc.) and at least 10 days climbing experience on rock. In other words, you need to be competent in basic climbing safety systems, including belaying, communication, tying-in, etc.  Climbing in the gym does not qualify. 

Required Equipment: Sterling Hollow Block or Sewn Prussic (No homemade prussics), Metolius Alpine PAS (preferred) or Metolius PAS 22 Personal Anchor System (No Exceptions)

A complete gear list and course schedule will be sent to students on sign up.

This class is held over 3 days in the Ouray Ice Park with a classroom session prior to the field days.
